Ramadan is a vulnerable 13-year-old child living together with his parents and two siblings a brother and sister in Aburoc. Ramadan is mentally impaired. This problem is not only witnessed in Ramadan but it also in his younger brother. Ramadan was experiencing many challenges in his life. He was isolated from the rest of the children because he got bullied and was in response was aggressive towards them. Sometimes his parents did not take him good care off, he walked around half naked and did not have the opportunity to get proper feeding. People in the society used to beat him up and chased him away so that he could not mix with their children; they saw him as an outcast in the society.

In 2017, WOCO moved to Aburoc to implement a Child Protection project. The project focused on Case manage¬ment and on pro¬viding psychosocial support to children affected by conflict and war. It is from that moment on that Ramadan was identified as one of the children who needed psychosocial support. In March 2017, Ram¬adan was enrolled in one of the WO¬CO’s Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) and all along animators to learn how to play with his peers has supported him. His hygiene is being taken care of and he was pro¬vided with clothing. From the beginning things were not all that easy, since Ramadan was not ready to socialize freely with the rest of the children and at the same time the rest of the children feared him due to his cu-riosity and aggres¬sive nature. Much effort has been in¬jected to him.

Psychosocial support he received from WOCO

Now two years down the line, the life of this child has improved tre¬mendously. Some of the changes that have been wit¬nessed in Rama¬dan include that he is now playing with the rest of children in CFS. He is accepted in the so¬ciety and the communi¬ty does not see him as an outcast anymore. He has proved to be obedi¬ent to adults and he can execute responsibilities such as being sent to the shop to buy items. He is communicating positively and there is a large change visible in the way Ramadan is able to learn; he can now write with a pencil and he enjoys drawing very much. This was some¬thing he could not do at all. Finally, the parents are overwhelmed by his changes and progress and are grateful to the support that WOCO has given to their family.
