The above grandmother lost a daughter as a result of complications on delivery.
Inaccessibility, inadequatematernal health care services coupled with lack of trained health personnel is one of the major challenges facing many South Sudanese women of reproductive age.Women die as a result of complications during and following pregnancy and childbirth. Most of these otherwise preventable or treatable complications develop during pregnancy but for lack of or inadequate health care services lives of especially young mothers are constantly at risk. Some complications may exist before pregnancy but are worsened during pregnancy, especially due to poor nutrition and lack of ante- natal care and services.
This newborn baby girl’s mother died on the way to Malakal, the state capital of Upper Nile State, as a result of severe anemia, which could have been easily treated during pregnancy if there had been a qualified health personnel and locally available maternal health care services. The child was left under the care of her grandmother who is also poor and vulnerable.
The case was reported to WOCO organization and a comprehensive assessment conducted to identify the needs, the child was put under case management and supported with milk and other necessities

Rigorous hygiene practice is importantwhen preparing feeds and drinks for a baby, to reduce the risks of stomach infections. This is particularly important during the early stages of weaning the babyaway from breast milk: wash your hands before preparing babyfoods or feeding a baby.
