A Call for Unity and Peace

Dear Readers,

As we reflect on the challenges facing our community in the Protection of Civilians (POC) site, we must highlight the urgent need for peace and unity. In a recent heartfelt speech, a representative mother shared the struggles faced daily by families living in these conditions.

Life in the POC site has been incredibly difficult since the onset of conflict in 2013. Tragically, children have faced dire consequences, with some drowning in the river, a poignant reminder of the risks they encounter daily. These mothers express their concerns, feeling trapped in an environment that resembles a prison rather than a community.

Yearning for Peace

The women of this community are uniting to call for peace—not only within the POC but throughout all of South Sudan. They emphasize the need to transcend tribal identities and focus on our shared humanity. “Let us not divide ourselves as Dinka, Nuer, Anyuak, Shilluk, or Murle,” they urge. “We must unite as one and live together peacefully.”

This plea resonates deeply, as discrimination and tribalism continue to fracture the fabric of our society. The mothers advocate for an end to these divisions, emphasizing that true peace can only be achieved when we stand together as one people.

A Commitment to Human Rights

My name is Nyiker Adigo, and I would like to thank WOCO for the valuable information they have shared with us. From our conversations, I want to highlight three key points that underscore the importance of human rights, essential for fostering peace in our community and throughout South Sudan. We must all work together to protect and uphold human rights, whether here in South Sudan or anywhere in the world.

Furthermore, we call upon the government of South Sudan to ensure stability and peace, allowing everyone to return to their homes and live peacefully. It is crucial that peace is not only established between different communities but especially in Upper Nile, where tensions remain high.

A Better Future for Our Children

Central to their message is the future of their children. Many young people are turning to gangs due to a lack of food and opportunities. The mothers highlight the absence of jobs within the POC, underscoring a critical issue that requires immediate attention. “All we desire is peace, so our children can have a better future,” they state.

Their vision is clear: a peaceful community where children can thrive, play, and build a brighter future. This vision aligns with the broader goals of peacebuilding organizations, such as WoCo, which are committed to fostering stability and opportunity within our communities.

Join the Movement

As we share these powerful voices, we invite you to join the movement for peace in South Sudan. It is essential that we listen to and support these mothers and advocates, recognizing their invaluable role in shaping a peaceful future. Together, let us work towards ending tribal divisions and creating a society where every child has the opportunity to flourish.

 Let’s unite for peace!
